STEEN Solution™ perfusion solution
Perfusion solution is a softening extracellular fluid developed for optimal perfusion of isolated donor lungs during ex-vivo perfusion. Solution contains human serum albumin from redundant interaction of white blood cells (leucocytes). This product is used to assess suitability of the lungs and to maintain a stable condition of the isolated lungs.
EVLP lung perfusion scheme provides in-vivo conditions for the lungs. The lungs being ventilated are perfused by deoxygenated solution with or without red blood cells. Under the normothermal conditions critical parameters like exchange of the gases, resistance of lung blood vessels and other key variables are monitored. Variables such as pressure, flow rate, dynamic conformity and low resistance of respiratory system are mostly used to assess the organ condition.

Product and tools of perfusion solution can maintain stable lung functions without developing edemas up to 10 hours at 37 °C; therefore, there is an opportunity to expand a pool of donors.
Because of the existing features every forth lung offered for transplantation is rejected. The rejected lungs of marginal and expanded donors have been successfully transplanted for two decades already; therefore, it becomes a usual practice. There are over 400 cases of transplantation of lungs perfused by ex-vivo method, and the number is increasing together with the expansion of the EVLP program in the entire world.
