Liver Assist™ perfusion system

Liver Assist is a system for ex-vivo hypothermic and normothermic oxygenated machine perfusion of donor livers prior to transplantation into recipients. The system consists of two primary components: the reusable Liver Assist device and a single use perfusion set.

Indications for use of the Liver Assist include in-hospital machine perfusion of donor livers from all deceased donor types as hypothermic to normothermic to preservation instead of static cold storage or reconditioning after static cold storage, with the intention to improve transplantation outcome of standard criteria donor livers, or to assess viability of extended criteria and eligible for discard donor livers.

We are representatives of the manufacturer XVIVO perfusion machines.

Mode of action

Following cold storage of the donor liver and before transplant, the liver is connected to the Liver Assist via a single-use perfusion set and continuously perfused with a cold or warm oxygenated perfusion solution, (depending on protocol) allowing for a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients, and removal of waste products.

During Hypothermic Oxygenated Machine Perfusion with the Liver Assist, the donor liver is perfused with a suitable cold solution to slow down cellular deterioration and support residual metabolic function, thereby reducing the detrimental effect of ischemia-reperfusion injury.

During Normothermic Oxygenated Machine Perfusion with the Liver Assist, the donor liver is perfused with a suitable warm solution to maintain the liver in a near-physiological state enabling viability assessment prior to transplantation into a recipient.
